"I believe Turkish design is finally exploiting its enormous potential. Being a nation with a tradition of sophisticated material culture, Turkey is very well positioned to produce great design. Our slow transition to a contemporary industrial economy has unfortunately slowed down our design potential n the past 50 years, but I believe the next years will finally establish Turkish design as a major player in the global scene.
There are however some challenges: the two biggest risks are to either fall into a generic "International Style", following global trends without a critical attitude, and the opposite risk of falling into cheap vernacular. This dilemma reflects in my opinion the challenge that Turkey always had as a country and as a culture: we’re are at the crossing of two continents and we need to develop an original perspective, not necessarily try and belong to either of the two.
My personal story, moving from Turkey to Italy and then to USA, has "forced" me to extend my sense of belonging to more than one place and one culture. In my design, I'm always looking for an original, contemporary interpretation of my multiple roots and inspirations."
